A tip off from a mate last night, a very early start, a quick stop to photograph the sunrise on the way, three hours of waves, big grins all around.

As you can see from the photos, the swell has come up from the south, combined with an offshore breeze there were plenty of waves on offer this morning. As Manly generally misses the south swell I decided to head up the beaches a little. The early start paid off with some great waves.

Yesterday delivered some decent swell along the beaches, Unfortunately it was accompanied by a howling offshore wind which kind of made you feel like you were dragging an anchor off the back of your board. Still it was better than no waves. This morning the swell is in the three foot range from the SE and Manly is picking up a little less of that size. The winds are light, the sun is out, no excuses, if your not working then go find a wave. If you are working then don’t stress too much as this swell looks set to build a little tomorrow.

Walking around with the camera from 5:55am to somewhere around 7:00am I only managed to squeeze off about 5 frames. None of them particularly inspiring. The south winds have kicked the swell up a tiny fraction but the prevailing onshore winds have made it virtually unsurfable, unless of course you are really desperate. Add to that a grey sky and I figured the best thing would be to randomly pick a few photos from the back catalogue to brighten up your Friday.

Father’s day is this Sunday. Say thanks to dad for not embarrassing you too much this year and get him something from the saltmotion gallery. We have plenty of works in stock as well as t-shirts and we also do gift vouchers, easy!

People often come up and chat to me on the beach in the mornings while I am photographing. It’s great, and for some reason it seems a time of day when people tend to get a little philosophical. This mornings words of wisdom from a fellow surfer: “Doesn’t matter how bad it (the surf) is, don’t ever forget how lucky we are to have it.” On that note I might just go put a wetsuit on and get out there for a few ankle size waves, just so I don’t forget…

It’s not exactly pumping out there today. In fact the small swell is weaker than it has been over the last few days, probably due to yesterdays strong winds messing it up. A light onshore breeze was also putting some extra wobble in the face making it pretty hard to get a decent wave. Surely this run of tiny surf has to end soon.

Yesterday the saltmotion gallery and café hosted the official launch of the Tom Wegener designed, GSI produced alaia “Seaglass Project.” Tom has been instrumental in rediscovering designs of “Alaia” surfboards, ridden by the ancient Hawaiians. His countless hours in the shaping bay and the water have allowed him to replicate and reproduce these ancient craft, with modern shaping materials. The boards will be available in the next few months – I can’t wait to get my hands on one!

Painted pastel skies at dawn are always worth getting up for… Another perfect morning with mild temps, sunshine and offshore winds. The swell is a little on the small side, again. You know the drill by now – if you want to surf take something capable of catching the small stuff. This run of small waves looks set to continue, by the time it gets big again you will probably have perfected your drop knee bottom turn, cross step and hang 5…

Monday morning and the Pacific delivers a small swell from the SE with light offshore winds and plenty of sunshine. Perfect for the longbaorders, just a little too weak for anything smaller than about 9” foot of foam. It looks like we can expect more of the same from the swell for the next week or so. Sniff out a good bank and get some tip-time on a single fin log!…

Airstreams and clouds. A gap in the horizon for the light to come through, and as if by magic, the whole sky moves through a spectrum of colour for twenty minutes. I click away and fumble with equipment. Then have a chat to the lone surfer who optimistically wondered down hoping for a wave. Cruising around the beach, taking more photos, chatting to people about when swell the will come up. Watching people run past, exercising, people who are normally out surfing. The swell should return tomorrow – I hope you saw the sunrise –

Someone stuck a plant in the sand half way down the beach. I know it’s unlikely, but I hope it grows. There was very little to surf this morning, still people were out, sitting, chatting and hoping for a wave to save them from having to paddle back to the beach. This flat spell has got to come to an end soon. The good news is the run of blue skies and sunshine we have been enjoying. Summer is on the way!…

By lunchtime yesterday the ocean started to come to life again. At dusk there were some quite defined lines of swell rolling through in the two foot range. That swell has hung around this morning although it does seem to be generating a disgraceful amount of close outs along the beach. Otherwise conditions are perfect. I guess you can’t have it all…
