Welcome to the Banyaks, a tiny group of islands off the northern part of Sumatra, Indonesia. They’re a little further north than the Mentawai Islands, where we were last year. It has taken us a little while to get here but it is certainly worth the effort as the area is rich in waves and low in crowd numbers. The waves on day one were not exactly pumping due to a large weather system that made the boat ride across from Sumatra interesting and is continuing to send unfavorable winds our way. However, after several flights and an overnight boat journey, everyone was excited to hit the water for the first session despite the slightly ruffled surface conditions.
