Into the jungle…

April 7th, 2011

Jungle boy...

On a lot of surf trips when you have to call a flat day, the crew tend to sit around dealing with cabin fever. Not here. The Solomon Islands has so much to offer that an excuse not to surf is almost welcome so you can take advantage of these amazing islands without feeling like you are missing out on any waves!.. With a fresh breeze roughing the surface we opted to skip hunting for waves and decided to head off into the jungle, hike to the top of a ridge and see what life is like for the people that inhabit the main islands. Our guide said, and I quote: “It might be a bit muddy.” That was quite possibly the understatement of the year. The tracks were a slippery mix of every different kind of mud. The sliding around just added to the sense of adventure. We hiked several hours through some amazing rainforest, stopped at a few waterfalls to swim and cool off, then kept on trekking. Another stop through a small bush village where a guy climbed a palm and cut a few coconuts for us to drink from gave us a boost before we headed back down to the coast, taking in some amazing views of the reef while walking under the hot sun. The day was topped off by a visit to a freshwater spring to wash, fill water bottles and relax a bit before heading back for dinner. For a while we all forgot that we had come here to surf, slipped into island time and just enjoyed a whole new world…

The Mentawai Islands are a dream destination for surfers and we have a charter heading there from the 17th to the 29th September. Contact us if you are interested in joining the crew.

Enjoy your day,
Joel Coleman
