The Solomon Islands
April 4th, 2011
We travelled for two days. Flights, boats and 4×4 vehicles, with each glimpse of the ocean and the anticipation of arriving in a tropical paradise. With the prospect of waves and only the people we were travelling with to share them, saw the excitement levels grow and grow with each bounce and bump along the way. We reached our destination late yesterday evening and sat down to a seafood feast before getting an early night in. The place we are staying is truly amazing. Built inside a lagoon on a small man made coral island you can see the water lapping beneath the floorboards and hear the surf breaking on the reef only a few hundred meters away. I will be sure to get plenty more photographs of the whole setup over the next few days.
The waves today were in the 3 foot range with the odd bigger set. The winds go from non-existent to a slight surface ruffle then disappear again all in the space of a few hours. The water is unbelievably clear and warm. When we asked out guide about the best time to surf his response was: “It’s up to you, there are no other surfers here so don’t worry about crowds” – paradise!
Enjoy your day,
Joel Coleman…
