Heading somewhere tropical!…

Sydney Harbour Flare

I’m heading somewhere a little more tropical and a little less crowded than Sydney at the moment. With a 7:00am flight to catch there was no time to photograph this morning so I decided to show you a few scenic photographs from the last week. These include some images from last Friday, which was one of the best sunsets I have ever seen in Sydney. As it turned out I just happened to be somewhere with a spectacular view of the harbour, camera at the ready… The next two weeks of saltmotion updates will be coming to you from the Solomon Islands, with today as a travel day I hope to be bringing you images of uncrowded perfection by Monday morning…

The next trip we have planned, that still has available spots, is to the Mentawai Islands in September, click (here) for more information so you can come with us…

Morning magic!... (sequence below)

If you have a look at the last photograph this morning, the one of the sunrise, you will see a pretty large rip chopping up the section of water just to the right of centre. Combine this rip with the following ingredients: A swell in the three foot range, clear skies, and four ridiculously good surfers all out for a training session together. The result, a damn fine display of surfing, very entertaining to watch… Each one of today’s photographs was worth more than just one frame so I have put the full sequences of each image in the filmstrip below…
Yoga and surfing are two things that really go hand in hand. I have met guys in their 80’s that are still surfing and credit their continued ease of movement to yoga. Jiiva are running courses starting April 11 aimed specifically at surfers, click through below to enquire…

Other things, like winning tickets…

closest thing to a sunrise...

Today is a good day to think about things other than surfing… Unless you have the time to go hunt around for somewhere that is breaking a little better than Manly. Amazingly though I did see a guy take of on what looked to be a dribble of a wave, reach the inside bank, get barrelled and come out. Crazy considering most waves were mushy closeouts… It was not even a week ago that we were enjoying some of the best conditions of the last twelve months, lets hope to see a swell like that again soon…
Win tickets to see ‘The Glide”. Saltmotion have two tickets give away. This is a sold out show on Friday April 8. Head to the wall of our facebook page for your chance to win the tickets…

Surfed out…

moving clouds...

My neighbour is one of the most surf-stoked man-grommets in existence. Given his willingness to surf as much as humanly possible I was damn surprised when he knocked on my door yesterday afternoon having not yet been for a wave. “I’m surfed out bro’ ‘nd my neck hurts.” (That’s a kiwi accent) And I realised then just how good last week was, the best, most consistent swell we have seen in quite a while, and I hope that everyone managed to get their fill of waves. Today is a different story with the swell not really getting in to Manly. If you are a logger or a just want to cruise then hit up the south end where it is a little smaller but holding a slightly better shape…

Better than leftovers…

Still the odd bomb...

Compared to the last few days you could call today ‘the leftovers,’ as the swell fades and begins to swing more to the south. But take the last few days out of the equation and look without comparison and you would have to say today was pretty good. There was still the odd decent set wave coming through, a few lips to tuck under and glassy, offshore, blue-sky conditions. Overall it is a lot better than leftovers and the size of the crowd out making the most of it was a testament to that!… There is a new swell building from the south for the weekend. Get out of town if you can and enjoy the autumn wave season…
The saltmotion gallery is open all weekend. Market Place, Manly. Come down and have a look, we put some new pieces on the walls yesterday… Remember to check out our facebook page as well, and click that ‘like’ button while you’re there…

The guys from Northern Beaches Chiropractors are always stopping by the gallery for a chat, their rooms are right next door… Any way, we got chatting about surfers and surf related injuries, turns out they know how to fix those sore backs and shoulders and have a new blog about their techniques, check it out

Still pretty good!…

I want one of them...

There are still plenty of waves on offer today and beautiful offshore, blue-sky conditions to match. Sure the swell has backed off a foot or so overnight but the larger sets are still finding their way through to the beach, just a little less frequently. I checked conditions about fifteen minutes before the sun came up and decided to photograph from the water. With the low tide at 7:00am I probably saw the worst of the conditions for the day, and lets face it, its still pretty good! So if you can, go surf… Forecasts are showing that the swell is going to back off a little more tomorrow before angling more from the south and increasing in size over the weekend…

Call it what you want…

the green and yellow goods...

Pick a cliché to describe good surf, call it what you want. I’m going with, ‘it’s pumping!…’ Sitting here at 12:30pm writing this I can still hear sets hitting the bottom of the cliff and I know that pretty much every spot along the northern beaches will have some damn fine waves on offer. From Queenscliff to the Bower there were good waves, really good waves. On the low tide there were plenty of barrels and on the higher tide smoking walls! The good news is the winds should stay favourable all day so if you missed this morning then plan for a late session… Be warned though there will be a lot of hungry surfers around trying to get their fill. I spent several hours photographing from the beach this morning, then shot from the water for a while before paddling out for a sample of what was on offer myself, hence the later than normal report… (Hey, I gotta get my fix too…)
The photography course we will be running at saltmotion in April (sorry about the mix up of dates yesterday) generated a lot of interest. There are still spots available. If you are interested then contact us for a booking form.
The Mentawai Islands offer better barrels, warmer water, and fewer people than we had at Manly this morning, and look how good it was today!… If you want to join us for a charter this September then click (here) for more information.

Good to see you back…

foam contortions

After lacking any real swell in these parts for some time it was great to get a little excited last night in anticipation of the predicted conditions. Although by no means a perfect day it is the best surf we have seen in a while. The swell is in the four to six foot range and the winds have stayed offshore all morning. The only down side was a lack of sunshine to light everything up. That’s why today’s update is a little later than normal. I decided to hold off as the weatherman mentioned that the skies would clear. They did, and I went back to the beach for a second session with the camera, this time in the water. Unfortunately due to a camera glitch I came away empty handed, so you will have to take my word that it is still pretty damn nice out there!…
The Glide is a performance by the ACO set to the backdrop of some inspirational surf imagery. The first performance has sold out and a second has just been announced for April 8. To quote Surfing World – “you’d be a damn fool to miss this.” More info and tickets (here)

If you could have stayed in bed this morning, you would have!… Heavy rain and howling winds have made going outside kind of uncomfortable… I can honestly say that I did not see a surfboard this morning. I did not even see anyone standing on the promenade looking like they were contemplating a wave! While I was wondering around trying to get a few photographs down at the Manly surf club a granny stopped and asked me if I was photographing in the water today. My response “Not a chance” her reply “What’s bloody wrong with you?” She then walked down the beach and with the aid of a few younger swimmers, to ensure her safety, went for a quick splash!
The Mentawai Islands… dreamy days of perfect waves and tropical islands. Far more attractive than what is on offer here today! There are limited spots available if you are you are keen on joining us for a charter there this September? More info (here)

Slow speeds and a little action…

walk-n yellow...

Dull greys in the sky, and a lack of anything much to surf forces the camera to look around just a little bit more. Slower shutter speeds help to show a little movement, while the high tide and a little shorebreak provide the action. There were a couple of people cross stepping a few waves and others trying their luck for a turn on the faster inside sections. Further along the beach there were some perfect hollow waves, which unfortunately were only two inches high… There are rumours of some decent swell for the weekend but with conflicting reports I am not willing to have a stab at an accurate forecast. Check all the charts and make your own call…
