Bioluminescent dinoflagellates…

Bioluminescent dinoflagellates… If you happened to have seen the ocean around Freshwater yesterday evening just before dark you may have noticed a large patch of sea that had turned a muddy reddish colour. This ‘red tide’ was a mass of dinoflagellates, a micro-organism that under the right conditions will emit a blue glow when agitated, such as when a wave breaks. This Bioluminescence is caused by a luciferase enzyme similar but not related to the enzymes in fireflies. In short it looks really cool and thanks to a few quick Google searches the above explanation was possible. No point trying to fool you into thinking I knew all that!… Waves today for the keen, worth a splash but not worth getting upset about if you missed it.
Enjoy your day,
Joel Coleman…

Hey Joel
How do you get that cool effect on a digital camera – the one around the breaking waves at the base of the cliff in the photo labelled, ‘clean water, green cliffs’.

I’m amazed by your words captain K-man, perhaps a spot as guest writer on saltmotion is in order?…

Hey Neil, it is really easy, just put the camera on a tripod (essential) and use a slow shutter speed.

Hey Joel, fantastic photo of the bioluminescene! Imagine what it’s like SCUBA diving in it at night… a mate & I often go night diving around Fairy Bower & just sit on the sand in the dark for ages waving our arms around… its like playing at being a wizard, throwing handfuls of white/blue/green sparks at each other! Spectacular, & its on our doorstep – what a fantastic place we live in

I have to agree Simon, it is an amazing place to live and I count my self lucky to call this coast home.

apparently if you get the red stuff in your mouth, it causes an infection and you can’t talk for around a week.

If only I knew that yesterday I would have collected some! – you never know when a few tea spoons of ‘please be quiet’ for a week might come in handy!…

Myself and a mate were the last two out next to the Queensy pool at 20:05 after a late surf and I saw it, it was amazing – like flashes of lightning in the wave just as it broke. Even more amazing that you captured it on camera…awesome.

WOW. Your photos are just a tad better than what I could manage with my iPhone last night. Shot this just before dark.
Was definitely a bizarre sight. Couldn’t work out WTF was going on!

This is a great photograph. I remember when I was young and we went swimming in a sea pool in the Wirral (Cheshire, UK) it was magic to see our arms and legs limned in phosphorescene. Even late,r rinsing out my bathers in the dark, (I had crept in late and was trying to be undiscovered!) there were still sparkles coming off them.

Every morning I look forward to receiving your pictures. Being stuck here in London, the pictures give me some insight into the wonderful life my daughter is leading there in Manley – I am extremely envious!!!

I was at a friends house in whale beach for the night last night, and we were walking on the other side of the road i thought i saw something on the water. the next wave came through and the whole wave, top to bottom lit up bright blue. i had already read this paragraph so i knew exactly what was going on. we sat for hours freezing just watching them all night. it was just after we had gotten out of the surf with just four of our closest friends sharing really fun waves with the sun setting behind us and a double rainbow right in-front of us. from where you’d rather be…
