Night Owl

June 23rd, 2010

Pacific rain

Pretty average conditions for surfing this morning. That does not seem to stop some people who were out doing there best to surf 2 foot onshore mush whilst the wind ripped in from the ESE. Respect to the motivated! Last night on my way home I spotted a massive owl sitting on a street sign minding its own business. The poor image quality is because the only camera I had on me was my phone. Despite the grain I always get a buzz out of seeing wildlife in the city. For fans of a popular children’s book the fact that he/she was sitting on a post office sign was not lost either.

Cool photo, did you know that this is a powerful owl?

Ok, now that I know it is a ‘Powerful Owl’ I have found some more information…

"The Powerful Owl is the largest owl in Australasia. It is a typical hawk-owl, with staring yellow eyes and no facial-disc. Adults reach 60 cm in length, have a wingspan of up to 140 cm and weigh up to 1.45 kilograms."

Powerful owl. wow. Look at the size of the talons on it. I think if you went back to that street sign you might even see talon marks on the sign. Wonder what it caught for dinner last night?? I think it was eyeing up you joel for a bit of dinner. It’s got the most deadly look in it’s eye.
