The end of winter

Freshie this morning, one of the better ones.

The last day of winter toady and we are greeted with perfect weather and a small swell. There were a few waves around over the weekend for those that managed to time things right with the tides and the wind. The swell is hovering around the two-foot mark and you really have to find somewhere exposed to make the most of it. Mixed bag of photos today from the weekend and the beaches this morning, enjoy…

Continues today

Knee high walls…

The pattern of small swell and amazing unseasonably warm weather continues today and looks set to continue for the weekend… Conditions are mighty fine if you are keen for a longboarding session, but if throwing spray and grinding bottom turns are your thing I’m afraid your still outta’ luck!.. Weatherman is calling 27c tomorrow at least that is something to look forward too!

There are people surfing down there…

If you looked hard enough this morning you could find a wave. It is still very small but it is rideable on the right equipment. The swell charts are starting to show an increase in swell sometime over the weekend, only a few feet but at the moment I think most of us will take what we can get!…

Photographing waves from below makes for some unique angles. The series of pictures you see today were taken yesterday about lunchtime. Kneeling in about a meter of water with a camera held just below the breaking wave to get the angle right. Clean water, offshore winds and bright sunshine did the rest…

ironed

fish-eye sunrise across Freshwater Beach

Howling offshore winds have ironed flat any chance of a rideable wave. There is usually one or two optimists sitting in water on a flat day waiting for a freak 1 foot set but even they have opted for coffee and a newspaper this morning. Say your prayers and hope for some swell soon…

Queenscliff

Oh yeah, no surf here today…

It sure does feel like it

Stand Up Paddler enjoying some solitude

Barefoot, shorts, t-shirts, warm northerly winds, small swell – summer? Well no, but it sure does feel like it. I can’t say a lot about the surf, if you are really keen to make the most of what’s there then take a longboard and you will find the odd knee high peeler… Whether your plans include surfing this tiny swell or not make sure you get outside sometime today and soak up a bit of sunshine.

enjoy the warm weather,

Micro bonus

Sunrise statues over Freshwater beach

Take your biggest board, head down to the beach and enjoy the sunshine, blue skies and warm weather. You will probably find yourself riding a few knee high peelers as well, think of them as a bonus not a disappointment!… This micro swell is set to stay with us for a while so make the most of what we have and get out there on a longboard…

Pattern

sunrise in the east…

The pattern we are in at the moment of short lived swells followed by several days of inconsistent small surf seems to continue. Waves are less than two foot everywhere at the moment and there is no sign of a new swell until next week. Some time off work and a ticket to Indonesia is sounding a like a pretty good idea. On the bright side the sunrise this morning was spectacular again with lots of amazing colours. I did manage to photograph a few waves that were surfed this morning at Manly and if you are a beginner then get out there as the gentle conditions are perfect for learning and there are no crowds!…

enjoy your day,

Heading home…

The pulse of south swell that arrived yesterday caught most by surprise, myself included. Unfortunately this morning it is all gone and we are left scratching for a few leftover peaks on the south facing beaches. The 7:08 high tide was probably not helping things either. Looking at the charts it seems we are in for another run of warm weather and small waves, dust of the 10 footer!..

Enjoy your day,

Sidestep

first waves, Queenscliff…

Sorry about missing yesterdays update, seems the dreaded winter flu I had managed to sidestep so far this year had other plans for me!… Pretty good timing though, the surf is not exactly pumping. I spent about an hour this morning watching and waiting for some good waves, there were a few but you had to have a fair amount of luck on your side with most simply hitting the bank and shutting down!… Lets hope things improve quickly…

enjoy your day,

Joel Coleman
